How to buy stock in BYD Car Company

I see this blog has been getting a lot of traffic these days. I also have watched the daily volume for BYD Car Company move upward at a steady pace. The stock used to trade in the $1 to $2 range. Today it closed in the mid $5 range.

If you want to research this stock you have to look under the ticker BYDDF or BYDDF.PK. Don't confuse BYD Car Co with BYD Gaming Corp which has the ticker "BYD".

Any broker in the USA can buy these share for you under the ticker BYDDF.PK.

I started buying shares at around $2 each. I have been buying as the price has moved up. More than price I watch the volume. When I first learned of this stock after reading a story about Buffet buying it I have been watching the volume. The ave daily volume used to be 100,000 shares a day or less. Today the volume topped 900,000 shares.

I now have about 5,000 shares of BYDDF. I think I will hold at this level for now. If the price breaks into the $6 range and stays there a few days I will buy more.

Bottom line to me is this - BYD car company is on the tip of the spear when if comes to electric cars. I think they will be the first to market. Once BYD gains permission to sell into the USA this stock will explode. Think about it.. how many people would buy a low priced electric car? Made is China does not carry as negative a meaning it once did.. Face it - some things are made BETTER in China. Who knows what the BYD Cars will be like but I am not taking the chance on missing out on this stock.

Ask yourself this - Why did Warren Buffet buy 10% of this company?? and a little known fact that I read is that good old Warren wanted to buy 25% of BYD but the CEO would only sell him 10%.

Introducing the BYD E6 Electric Car

BYD, China's biggest battery maker, isn't wasting any time carving its niche in the new world of electric cars and plug-in hybrids. It all started with the F6DM plug-in hybrid sedan, followed by the smaller and less expensive F3DM plug-in hybrid compact car.

Now BYD has introduced its E6 electric car at the Beijing International Auto Show. It takes the shape of a crossover, or MPV, and will be built on on the F6's platform (same as the F6DM, which could be sold in Europe by 2010).

So far, all we know is that the E6 will be a 5 seater with an acceleration of 0 to 100 kph of around 10 seconds. Top speed should be top speed of 160 kph (100 mph), and the battery pack, which is located under the rear passenger seats, will be based on BYD's own lithium-ion iron phosphate technology. Range per charge is expected to be 300 km (186 miles).

But most impressive of all:

"BYD projected the battery had a life of 2,000 cycles, for a lifetime range of about 600,000 km (373,000 miles)"

Wow! Even if thats just half true, it's still pretty good.

BYD cars - A Small Showing, but With Big Dreams

DETROIT — For the first time, two Chinese carmakers are exhibiting this year on the main floor of the Detroit auto show, a promotion of sorts from the usual spot they were given for previous shows in the convention hall’s basement or lobby.

One of those carmakers, BYD, a Chinese manufacturer that produces many of the world’s cellphone batteries and only began selling cars in 2003, also upgraded its ambitions, saying it would be the world’s largest automaker by 2025.

Few people here are willing to dismiss its goals as absurd.

“They are very competent in the battery business,” Nick Reilly, president of the General Motors Asia-Pacific region, said of BYD. “I think they’ve got a fair way to go on the car side of the business. But they are certainly not to be ignored. They have a great deal of support from the Chinese government.”

Brilliance Auto, which has relationships with BMW and Porsche, is the other Chinese carmaker on the main floor.

BYD, which stands for Build Your Dreams said that by 2011, it planned to begin selling in the United States an electric crossover vehicle with a 250-mile range and a plug-in hybrid vehicle. It started selling a smaller version of the plug-in hybrid in China last month, almost two years before the Chevrolet Volt is scheduled to go on sale, and a year before Toyota says it will introduce a plug-in vehicle.

“We think it’s quite practical and can do well in this market,” the chairman of BYD, Wang Chuanfu, said in an interview. “We are a company that, when we set a target, we’re going to make it.”

Analysts are not so sure that BYD or any other Chinese manufacturer is that close to arriving in the United States. Similar promises by companies like ZX Auto, which vowed during last year’s Detroit show that its vehicles would arrive stateside by the end of 2008, have fallen short.

Mr. Wang said BYD was studying how to establish a dealership network, which analysts said could take longer than expected.

“They underestimate how much it’s going to take to break into the market,” said David Champion, director of auto testing for Consumer Reports. But Mr. Champion called some of the vehicles, “very impressive.”

Brian Johnson, an analyst with Barclays Capital, expressed skepticism about the companies’ lofty claims, though a recent investment in BYD by Warren E. Buffett’s holding company, Berkshire Hathaway, has considerably increased its credibility.

“They’re making five-year leaps every year,” Mr. Johnson said. “But the interiors and styling still need work.”

Executives from Brilliance said they planned to export vehicles to North America, Europe and Russia but gave no time frame for entering the United States. For now, Brilliance is gauging reaction to its cars and learning about the market.

The Detroit show “is an excellent platform to measure ourselves against international standards,” said He Guohua, a Brilliance vice president.

The company, which said it has 35,000 employees and $4.5 billion in assets, is showing four cars in Detroit, including a sports car and a luxury sedan.

“They are all really nicely done,” Mr. Champion said.

Warren Buffett-Backed Electric Car Makes Detroit Debut

China's BYD Auto's e6 all-electric automobile made its Detroit debut today, with an assist from the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary MidAmerican Energy Holdings.

MidAmerican and Warren Buffett made headlines last September, paying $230 million for a 10 percent stake in BYD.

CNBC's team at the Detroit Auto Show shot some video of the car, described by the manufacturer as a "mid-size five passenger crossover vehicle" with a range of about 250 miles on a single charge.

A shorter-range electric vehicle was introduced in China last month.

In a news release, BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu is quoted as saying the company plans to sell both all-electric and hybrid vehicles in the U.S. starting in 2011. He also says BYD will set up manufacturing facilities in the U.S. "when it is appropriate."

MidAmerican Chairman David Sokol was also present at the Detroit show. His quote: "For the electric-vehicle market to mature, the underlying charging infrastructure and technologies must mature at least simultaneously, if not first. Perhaps like no other corporate entity in the world, we are in a position to help make that happen."

How to buy shares or stock in Byd Company Limited

Back in about October 2008 I read an article about Warren Buffet buying a chunk of a small company in China that made made cars and batteries. I figured I had some extra cash, the market was down (good time to buy), and the green car market was sure to grow with the recent high gas prices. After a few days of research I finally discovered that shares of Byd Co Ltd CAN be bought here in the USA. The stock is sold under the ticker symbol BYDDF . Any brokerage can help you buy it or if you have a TD Ameritrade account you can buy it yourself. If took a lot of research to finally find the correct ticker symbol. I hope this blog ranks wells so that it will save people time when they want to buy this stock.

My theory is that the next Dot Com like boom will be in the area of Electric cars. What else can we build here in the USA as an industry? Sure we can spend time and money on rebuilding roads and bridges, however, when it comes to a new manufacturing base our options are limited. Are we going to go back to making TVs? I dont think so. We are going to lead the world into the age of green cars and these cars will be made at plants in the USA (ok and ya maybe a few in China as well :) ).
